Schools remained closed Monday but things were returning to normal this week after a winter storm hit the area starting last Thursday evening.

Freezing rain and sleet moved over this area Thursday afternoon followed by 5-7 inches of snow on Friday making roadways treacherous for travelers. No major problems developed from the latest winter storm though, according to local offi-cials.

“It went very well considering the amount of snow we received,” Elkins Mayor Jack Ladyman said on Monday. “There were no major power outages and although we had city hall open in case it was needed for emergencies on Friday and Saturday, we didn’t have anyone come in.”

Ladyman said two city officials, Henry Hickman and Don Cryder, used city equipment to clean most of the city’s paved roads and some parking areas.

“I think a decent job was done and it helped,”he said.

The National Weather Service of Tulsa reported on Monday that Fayetteville received 6.8 inches of snow. Small towns in Washington County, such as Elkins, West Fork and Greenland received 4-6 inches.

Schools in Elkins, West Fork and Greenland were closed Friday and Monday.

While local emergency and road crews prepared for the worst, so did the governor’s office. On Friday morning, Gov. Mike Beebe declared a State of Emergency in response to the winter storm warnings covering a good portion of the state. The declaration would free up to $20,000from the Governor’s Disaster Fund to supply support and resources if needed.

Washington County Emergency Management Director said there were no major problems in the county and crews kept major roads cleared once the snow stopped.

There were no major accidents either, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Only some fender benders and cars in ditches.
